PLANTING DENSITY AND YIELDS
GARLIC
Autumn Garlic
- Traditional varieties : Germidour, Messidrôme :
o 8 to 9 plants per linear meter
o 160,000 to 180,000 bulbs / ha, equivalent to 1,200 to 1,350 kg of seeds
o There are approximately 133 bulbs / kg for size 50/60, or about 7 g per bulb
o There are approximately 111 bulbs / kg for size +60, or about 9 g per bulb
- New varieties : Messidor, Sabagold => more productive
o 11 plants per linear meter
o 220,000 bulbs / ha, equivalent 1,500 kg of seeds (133 bulbs / kg)
Spring Garlic
- 10 to 12 plants per linear meter
- 190,000 bulbs / ha, equivalent 1,000 kg of seeds.
- There are approximately 120/130 bulbs per kg (size +55) to 150 bulbs per kg (size 50/60).
Planting depth : 6-7 cm.
Garlic yield : 8,000 to 14,000 kg / ha
SHALLOTS
Manual planting is preferred because the bulbs must be straight to develop properly.
- 2 major varieties :
o Grey shallot : Griselle, Grisor
- Sandy-loamy soil (strong root system =>difficulty in uprooting with clay soil)
- 8 to 12 plants per linear meter.
- 700 to 900 kg / ha
o Red shallot : Jersey type
- Long and semi-long varieties : Jermor, Longor, Pesandor
- Semi-round varieties : Mikor
- Well-exposed and ventilated plots (avoid wet areas)
- 8 to 12 plants per linear meter.
- 1800 kg / ha.
Planting depth : 2-3 cm.
ONIONS
The information regarding the density and yield of onions is as follows.
- 1 bulbil = 2 to 4 g (size 14/21) ;
- 5 rows per bed spaced 45 cm apart ;
- 25 bulbs per linear meter spaced 4 cm apart;
- Total : 125 bulbs per bed, or approximately 500 g of seeds per bed ;
- Provide 1,000 kg of seeds for small size (7/15) per ha ;
- Provide 1,400 kg of seeds for standard size (14/21) per ha ;
- Yield : 40,000 to 50,000 kg per ha.
